DAP identified an unmet need in older adults; high prevalence of anemia but no understanding of its clinical consequences or the benefits of treatment. DAP facilitated collaboration among leaders in geriatrics and hematology with a pharmaceutical company. Within three years there were over 50 publications on the prevalence and consequences of anemia in the elderly, multiple meetings/symposia organized by the leadership of geriatric and hematology professional associations, senate appropriations to fund NIH research, and a clinical program to develop treatment.
